FOUNDATION AND HISTORY
Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Western Languages and Literature was established in 1993. The department started its educational activities for the first time in the 1999-2000 academic year with the members of the academic staff in the Department of English Language and Literature. The medium of instruction is English. The education period is 5 (five) years including the Preparatory Programme. As of the 2022 - 2023 academic term, our department has also started to offer the Pedagogic Formation Programme. The Applied Linguistics Master's programme, which was opened within the Institute of Social Sciences since the 2001-2002 academic year, is one of the few graduate programmes in the field of our country. The duration of education is 2 years. In the Spring semester of 2008-2009 academic year, the English Language and Literature PhD programme was also established.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Students who fulfil the requirements determined by the Higher Education Institution (YÖK) and receive the sufficient score from the Higher Education Institutions exam(YKS) are enrolled in the department.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The department offers courses in English Language, English Literature, American Culture and Literature, Linguistics, English Language Education, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Assessment and Evaluation, Research Methods in Linguistics and Literature, as well as Corpus Linguistics. The aim of our department is to provide students with skills in language teaching, translation and literary criticism. Our students successfully participate in Erasmus, Mevlana and Farabi programmes and gain experience at home/abroad.
REQUIREMENTS AND RULES FOR THE DEGREE TO BE EARNED
Students who successfully complete all of the courses in the programme (240 ECTS credits in total) and obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are awarded a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature.
EXAMS, ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
For each course, students are subjected to a midterm exam / semester study (seminar, quiz, homework or a second midterm exam) and a final exam. The mid-term exam contributes 50%, while the final exam contributes 50% to the grade. All exams are evaluated out of 100 points. Students are required to get at least 45 points from the final exam. Students who receive one of the letter grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) from a course are considered to have succeeded in that course. To take the final exam of a course, students must be enrolled and attend at least 70% of first-time courses and 80% of seminars. Students who fail to fulfil these conditions cannot be admitted to the final exam.

EMPLOYMENT FIELDS OF GRADUATES
Fields where our graduates can work: English language teaching in the Ministry of National Education, English language lecturer in public and private universities, research assistant in similar departments, interpreter, counselling, exporting/importing departments in private companies. Some of our students can also be employed in tourism and aviation as well as in the private sector.
DEPARTMENT FACILITIES
The Department of English Language and Literature is located in the Faculty of Literature building and the department facilities are as follows: 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, 3 Lecturers, 4 Research Assistants in the department.
There are 15 rooms for academic staff.The department also houses 7 classrooms.
