ESTABLISHMENT AND HISTORY

The Department of Mathematics, one of the first departments of our University, was established within the Faculty of Basic Sciences on September 19, 1963, with Law No. 336. The Department had offered only basic sciences lectures of the Engineering Departments until it started to teach Mathematics students in the 1971-1972 academic year. The Department of Mathematics, which started undergraduate education in addition to the basic sciences lectures of other faculties in the 1971-1972 academic year, started doctorate education in the 1973-1974 academic year and master education in the 1981-1982 academic year. The Department continues its undergraduate, master, and doctorate educations from the 1981-1982 academic year. In the 1974-1975 academic year the Department passed to the Mathematics Engineering curriculum, but gave up afterwards. In the 2008-2009 academic year the English Language Preparatory Program and the Secondary Education Program started. We have 14 Professors, 10 Associate Professors, 8 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer Dr., 1 Lecturer and 8 Research Assistants in our department. Currently the department carries out undergraduate, masters and doctorate programs.

ACCEPTANCE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

1. A high school diploma.
2. Turkish Citizens: Sufficient points from YKS (Student Selection Exam for Universities),
3. International Students: TR-YOS (Exam for Foreign Students for Higher Education in Turkiye), English qualification (TOEFL 500 points / IELTS 6 points)

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM

The Department of Mathematics is one of the long-established units of our university and aims to serve society with its 38 years of history and experienced dynamic staff. The Department of Mathematics carries out its internal and external activities and duties within the framework of broad vision, through the Dean's Office and the Rectorate. The stakeholders that the Department of Mathematics interacts with and expected to interact with can be summarized as TÜBİTAK, DPT, Employers (Cram Schools, Banks), Universities, Research Institutions, Institutes, and Graduates.

RECOGNITION OF THE PRIOR LEARNING

In order to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting and adjustment of the acquisitions acquired by the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University outside a higher education institution, the Senate Decision dated 28.07.2023 and numbered 340 "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning" was adopted and entered into force.

Directive;
* Recognition of knowledge, skills and competencies gained with special interest through exemption exams to be counted instead of program courses,
* Recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be counted instead of program courses,
* It includes the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions in line with their special interests.

The announcement of the courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, the receipt and evaluation of applications are made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of Prior Learning will offer many benefits to our students and employers. For our students; increasing professional development and mobility in the labor market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, increasing student motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' point of view, it will contribute to the elimination of skill or qualification deficiencies in the workplace, reduce the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes and thus contribute to more efficient use of resources.

REQUIREMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF EXPECTED DEGREE

To earn a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics (to receive a Mathematician title) students have to
(a) pass all lectures in the curriculum at least with DC.
(b) get at least a 2.0 weighted average mark from 4.0.
(c) prepare a graduation project, present it to a jury, and pass.

EXAMS, ASSESSMENTS, AND EVALUATION

For every lecture students are subject to a midterm exam, term study (project, seminar, quiz, homework, or a second midterm exam), and a final exam. The overall grade consists of 30% midterm exam grade, 20% term study grade, and 50% final exam grade. Every exam grade is over 100 points. Students have to get at least 45 points from the final exam. Students who get AA, BA, BB, CB, or CC succeed in the lecture. Students can only enter two resit exams for the lectures of the same semester.

REQUIREMENTS OF GRADUATION

Students who pass all lectures of the curriculum (a total of 240 AKTS) successfully, get at least a 2.0 weighted average mark from 4.0, and complete a graduation project receive the Mathematician title and graduate.

EMPLOYMENT AREAS OF THE GRADUATES

Graduates of the Department of Mathematics are employed by various private or public sectors. Furthermore, many graduates work as Math teachers.

ACCEPTANCE TO GRADUATE LEVEL PROGRAMS

Successfully graduated students who get sufficient marks from ALES (an exam) and have English proficiency can apply to a graduate program.

The infrastructure and laboratory facilities of our department are as follows: 7 technically equipped classrooms for 225 students and 1 computer laboratory for 30 students.
