Part-Time Appointment of Qualified Researchers

As Karadeniz Technical University, pursuant to Article 46 (Additional) of Higher Education Law No. 2547, applications are invited for the part-time appointment at higher education institutions of qualified researchers holding a PhD degree (Turkish or foreign nationals) who are actively employed at: internationally recognized foreign higher education institutions; overseas institutions and organizations conducting R&D activities; domestic public institutions and their affiliated research centers or institutes; technology development zones; research infrastructures; private sector R&D centers*; or R&D-oriented units or laboratories.


Scope and Purpose of the Call

This call aims to recruit qualified researchers to our university in order to contribute to scientific research, R&D, innovation or design activities, participate in academic projects, and support undergraduate and graduate education.


Eligibility Criteria

Researchers meeting the following criteria may apply:

  • Holding a PhD degree.

  • Being employed full-time at an institution other than a higher education institution in Türkiye.

  • Turkish and foreign applicants must meet at least one of the following conditions:

    • Being the holder of a registered patent or design;

    • Having at least one first-authored publication in journals/events/books indexed in Scopus or Web of Science;

    • Having served as a project coordinator or researcher in at least one R&D/Product Development project in their current institution;

    • Having at least three (3) years of post-PhD work experience in the private sector in R&D/Product Development;

    • For appointments from abroad: having worked for at least one year as a faculty member/researcher at an internationally recognized foreign higher education institution**** or as a researcher in an institution conducting R&D activities;

    • Having served as a researcher in private sector R&D/innovation/design centers.

  • Not currently holding a part-time appointment at another higher education institution.


Terms and Duration of Appointment

  • The appointment period is up to one year and may be extended under the same procedure based on satisfactory performance.

  • Researchers will be employed part-time, serving at least one day per week.

  • During the appointment period, researchers may not undertake administrative duties or vote in academic boards.

  • Appointed researchers are expected to teach courses, supervise students, conduct scientific research, and contribute to R&D projects.


Financial Conditions and Remuneration

Payments will be made within the following daily and monthly upper indicator limits:

Payment will be calculated based on the actual number of days worked in the relevant month and will be paid by the appointing higher education institution on the 15th of the following month. Income tax and stamp tax will be deducted. No additional payment beyond the amount specified in this article shall be made.


Application Procedure

The decision of the relevant academic unit (Faculty, Vocational School, Research Center, etc.) regarding the applicant must be submitted to the ARGES Unit via EBYS together with a motivation letter.

Required Documents

  • Application Form (to be completed, signed, and uploaded)

  • Decision of the unit academic board (attached to the motivation letter)

  • Updated academic CV

  • Copy of ID/passport

  • Passport-size photograph

  • Declaration stating that the applicant does not hold a part-time appointment at another institution

  • Çukurova University Letter of Undertaking (to be completed, signed, and uploaded)

  • Active employment certificate (e.g., official social security record)

  • List of publications, patents, designs, and projects with supporting documents

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD diplomas or QR-coded e-government printout (equivalency certificate required for foreign graduates)

  • Academic title certificates (if applicable)

  • Certificate of international recognition (if applicable)

  • Documentation of projects conducted or participated in (if applicable)

  • Documents proving the required work experience (e.g., proof of Technopark/Technology Development Zone or R&D center status under relevant laws)

  • For researchers applying from abroad: documentation showing university ranking or official proof of R&D activities conducted by the employer

  • If applying in priority research areas listed below: a minimum 350-word research summary

  • Institutional/industrial permission letter

After evaluation by the relevant unit, applications will be submitted to the University Administrative Board. Approved applications will be forwarded to the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).


Priority Areas in Evaluation

Priority will be given to applications that:

  • Conduct R&D within the scope of “Priority R&D and Innovation Topics for Alignment with the Green Deal”;

  • Align with TÜBİTAK 2024–2025 Priority R&D and Innovation Topics at appropriate Technology Readiness Levels;

  • Contribute to the objectives of the 12th Development Plan;

  • Aim at commercialization of an active patent application/registered invention owned by the university through university-industry collaboration;

  • Aim at commercialization of an active patent application/registered invention owned by an industry partner through university-industry collaboration;

  • Involve applicants from internationally recognized foreign higher education institutions or R&D/innovation/design centers;

  • In Social Sciences and Humanities, address research topics aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.


Definitions

*Private Sector: Companies located in technology development zones and R&D centers subject to Law No. 5746.

**Qualified Researcher: Turkish or foreign nationals holding at least a PhD degree and employed in the institutions specified above, who meet at least one of the stated criteria (patent/design holder, first-authored publication indexed in Scopus or Web of Science, experience in R&D/Product Development projects, or minimum three years of post-PhD sectoral R&D experience).

***Part-Time Appointment: Appointment for at least one day per week, not exceeding one year, to participate as a coordinator/researcher in scientific research and application, R&D, innovation or design activities and to teach or supervise at undergraduate/graduate level.

****Internationally Recognized Foreign Higher Education Institution: An institution ranked within the top 1000 globally in at least one of the following rankings—Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), or CWTS Leiden Ranking—or within the top 500 globally in subject-based rankings of at least one of these organizations.
