The Council of Europe's Convention No. 108 on the Protection of Individuals about Automatic Processing of Personal Data was opened for signature on January 28, 1981, and Turkey was among the first countries to sign it.

In 2006, the Council of Europe declared January 28 as European Data Protection Day, and since 2016, this date has also been celebrated as Data Protection Day in our country.

Data Protection Day will be celebrated this year on January 28, 2026, with a panel discussion titled “The Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sector and the Protection of Personal Data on the 45th Anniversary of Convention No. 108” at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center of Karadeniz Technical University.
