The 43rd National Congress of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (OR/IE) Held at Our University

The congress took place from October 2 to 4, 2024, hosted by our university at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Cultural and Congress Center.

Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI, delivered the opening speech at the OR/IE Congress, one of the most established professional and scientific organizations in Türkiye since 1975. Held in the Black Sea region for the first time, the congress focused on "Disaster Management," a theme of national and regional importance. Prof. Dr. ÇUVALCI emphasized the region's vulnerability to natural disasters, such as floods, landslides, and rockfalls, and highlighted the role of industrial engineers in using scientific and technical methods to improve disaster management and reduce the impact of such events.

The congress theme, "Disaster Management in Operations Research/Industrial Engineering," was inspired by the significant effects of recent disasters, such as the February 6 earthquakes, and other natural and human-made events like floods, forest fires, and mining accidents. The congress has highlighted the importance of risk management, crisis organization, and recovery strategies to minimize disaster losses and ensure public safety.

Discussions included the role of Industrial Engineering in disaster risk assessment, humanitarian supply chain management, stock management before and after disasters, crisis management, and decision support systems. The congress, co-organized by the Industrial Engineering Department of our university, featured academic sessions, guest speakers, sector panels, and project competitions, aiming to bring together practitioners, academics, and students with a focus on disaster risk reduction and management strategies.
